As you enter from under the cool green outdoor canopy, the warm ruby glass of the front interior doors beckons the traveler to step back in time. This same glass casts a cozy glow over the entire foyer, including the hand-crafted solid black walnut staircase, the exquisite wood floor of red oak and mahogany, and the original plaster crown molding. |
| After signing the guest register and given literature about all the variety of activities that abound in this Vacationland on the shores of Lake Erie, we invite you to step into the restored Irish Victorian parlor. Victorian colors were very bold; consequently, we have a very vivid green parlor! Perched all about the 1880 vintage pump organ, which is completely restored, is our collection of Irish Santas. This graceful instrument is also carved of walnut and its sound is magnificent. If you "tickle the ivories", we encourage you to play, but don't be surprised if you draw a crowd; we all love a good recital! |
| We're so grateful to have the original burled wood pocket doors throughout the common areas. Their massiveness balances the high ceilings and complements the two hand-crafted solid black walnut fireplaces, one in the Irish parlor and the other in the dining room. |
| Now to the dining room and the cranberry parlor beyond. Both of these rooms have been totally restored--drop ceilings removed to expose the graceful plaster crown molding, hidden for so many years, and walls taken to the original plaster. The "gem" of the dining room is the chandelier; it's Waterford. In late afternoon when the sun strikes the crystals, a multitude of color dances on the ceiling. We do believe that Captain Montague would be pleased. Yes, there really was a Captain C. Z. Montague, Great Lakes captain. He and his wife Sarah were widely known throughout the county for their grand parties and receptions. In fact, our dining room was their receiving or reception room and our cranberry parlor was for gents only; that was the Captain's billiards room. The large table in the dining room seats ten, and the cozy round table in the alcove seats four. This sunny spot is a favorite of so many of our guests whether eating, playing cards, or just day-dreaming. Breakfast is taken here in cool an d cold months. During the summer, breakfast is available in the charming gazebo adjacent to the swimming pool. Be sure to bring your sweet tooth because we'll be serving our signature pastry--Irish Cottage Scones--along with our 100% Columbian coffee. |
| When we purchased the property in 1994, what is now our cranberry parlor (another bold Victorian color) was a guest room. Since we do a variety of private parties and receptions, we needed more common area space, so this, too, became a restoration project. The plaster crown molding was exposed and repaired, the walls smoothed, and the ceiling completely redone. This room has a very warm, fuzzy feeling to it. One of our guests best described it as a "room that hugs you." |
| We invite you to share our lovely home with us. Please be comfortable here; make it your home away from home. We are fortunate to have two kitchens, so the galley kitchen directly off the dining room is for your use. Help yourselves to teas, coffee, soft drinks, ice, fruit, and sweet treats at any time--day or night. Feel free to use the frig, microwave, ice buckets, wine glasses, etc. Coffee is programmed to perk at dawn for you early risers who need a good mug of java to get the blood flowing before breakfast. Around the corner from the galley is our eclectic library filled with books, games, cards, and puzzles. Just enjoy! And, yes, the lilt of Irish music can be heard throughout the common areas. |
| Our home's floor plan is such that there is one guest room on the first floor; the others are divided between the front stairs and back stairs so none of our guests get that "closed in" feeling. All of our accommodations are quite private and very quiet and all come with their own private baths and central air conditioning. |
| We¿ll start the tour of the guestrooms in Molly's Room, located on the first floor. We renamed this room because Molly is a very precious name in our family and it's very Irish as well. With a new name came new décor. The soft lavender, pastel green, and white eyelet give a softness and comfort to this room. This room also offers some flexibility as the bed can be either king-sized or two twin beds. One of the original mantels is located in Molly's Room, this one in oak, giving this room the perfect finishing touch. Rate range is $115-$145. |
| Let's go up the front stairs next. The rooms here are named after members of the Captain's family. |
| The first is Edith's Room, named in honor of his daughter. The light fixture dates back to the Captain's time, and interestingly, it was a combination gas and electric fixture. This room comes complete with a queen-size brass bed and the bathroom has one of the original marble sinks. If you treasure sunny mornings, Edith's room is perfect because of its eastern exposure and large windows. Having been totally restored and redecorated in Jan. '06, it's no surprise that yellow was chosen as the predominant hue with accents of green. You may even spot a friendly frog or two--Victorian ones, of course! Rate range: $110-$140 |
| Next is Sarah's room. This room, named in honor of the Captain's wife, was completely restored in 2007. The queen size bed is crafted of enameled iron and adorned with delicately-painted porcelain balls. The fireplace, mantel, and tiles are all original to the house. This room is meant for a Princess and her Prince Charming. (Look for updated photo soon!) Rate range is $110-$140. |
| Across the hall is the Captain's Quarters that has a queen sized, four-poster rice bed and the original parlor chandelier. Having been restored and redecorated in Jan. '05, this is the most regal of our guest rooms. The walls are painted a "thistle" shade with a hand-trimmed dropped border. The drop ceiling was removed and a new ceiling took its place, restoring the original height to the room. There is large steamer trunk between the two windows. This is only one of several that you'll find throughout the home. The Captain's Room has one of the original marble sinks and it boasts of a large two-room bathroom with the original foyer chandelier. Rate range is $110-$140. |
| Now its back downstairs and up the back staircase. Of course, when the Captain lived here, this is where the hired help stayed. |
| The last room on the tour is Jenny's room. It is our Bridal or Anniversary Suite. Take a gentle step down into this fairy-tale room. The four poster queen bed is certainly fit for a queen and her king with its lacey canopy and luxurious linens. We hope that this room goes beyond your expectations. Next to the fireplace are another three steps that lead you to the dressing area, and the full private bath is on the left. The bathroom was just redecorated with a very personal touch of hand-painted petite bouquets on the cabinets. Rate range is $140-$155. |

| Captain Montague's is located just two short blocks from Lake Erie in the Old Plat portion of the original village that remains. Our property is large, stretching a full block, and is surrounded by a white picket fence. As the saying goes, be sure to "stop and smell the roses" as well as the graceful wisteria that intertwines the pickets and the unique night-blooming moon flowers. |
| At the back of the house, on the site of the old carriage house, is a large gazebo that is furnished in comfortable wicker. You'll find this a delightful place for your morning breakfast (weather permitting), and of course, it's perfect for lounging, anytime. Bring your favorite book, curl up on the wicker swing, and lull the hours away. Just across from the gazebo you'll find our rose-trellised Amish swing made just for romantics. We suggest a visit here at twilight time, perhaps with your favorit e beverage to sip. |
| Adjacent to the gazebo is the in-ground swimming pool that is completely enclosed by whitewashed latticework and fragrant, peaceful gardens. The hanging baskets filled with large vibrant Angel Wing begonias that encircle the pool area are in bloom from Memorial Day through mid-October. They truly are spectacular! In the summer the oh-so fragrant oriental lilies are magnificent; the iris, majestic; and the fields of daisies and St. John's Wort carpet the interior of the pool area. |
| On the home's pillared, or south side, you'll see a variety of colorful annual and perennial flowers and shrubs including a rainbow of tulips and daffodils in the springtime and the Victorian statue that sports a whimsical "hair-do" in summer. f the gazebo is the small pond with a soft-sounding fountain surrounded by ferns, daylilies, and feathered astilbes all protected by a garden sculpture of two innocents under an umbrella. Nearby stands a stone Celtic cross that signifies the Irish influence of the property. eetest fragrance. We certainly recommend a stroll by these beauties during your stay with us. |
| While you're taking your stroll, visit the charming tree-lined Lakefront Park that is at the end of our street, just a short two blocks from our front door. You may even be lucky enough to sight a swan or two. If not, there are plenty of seagulls to entertain you. Just one block from the park is Huron's "mile-long" fishing pier with the Huron Lighthouse, a beacon for all boaters, at the very tip of the pier. What a romantic walk this is at sunset... or sunrise! Just one block east of the Captain's is Huron's Municipal Boat Basin and Amphitheater. There is free live entertainment every weekend throughout the summer months. And Ohio's oldest summer stock theater, The Huron Playhouse, is in production for five weeks beginning in July, and it is jus t around the corner from us. We keep a schedule of the plays, so if you are interested, we will be happy to make reservations for you. |

| Montague Mystery Programs |
There is a legend that Capt. Montague's - being an Irish Inn - was built on a plot of enchanted earth, that there are nights here when everything is magically transformed and that even our guests become "changelings". On these nights villains
stalk the halls and even the mildest guest may be a spy, an assassin - or a poisoner gone mad. Welcome, my friend, to one of the Captain's nationally-acclaimed Montague Mystery presentations! (NOTE: Captain Montague's was voted 2nd in the nation for our unique mystery weekends) |
| A Mystery at the Captain's |
Our Mysteries are designed exclusively for Captain Montague's by the good Mr. Denham's "Shadow Stalkers" and "Random Acts" Productions. In short, you won't be watching a show; At the Captain's, you'll be in the show, where everything you do will have an effect - and where your next mistake may be your last! Just think of it as acting out the game of "Clue" with more spice, song, and spoof in the mix! |

| Coming Attractions |
| The Captain's Murder Mysteries will resume in the fall of 2007. Look for a new schedule in June, 2007. |
| Some Past Mysteries |
| We have presented a number of mysteries over the past eight years and a brief description of them may give you a better idea of the kind of excitement and fun you can expect at the Captain's: |
The Case of the Tell-Tale Toucan - a delightful mystery (with apologies to Edgar Allen Poe) that rivals the Maltese Falcon and keeps our guests guessing and laughing. Death in the Fog - our sleuths begin by learning of the historical Capt. Montague's obsession with the search for the deadly and elusive Lake Erie Creature - the legendary Sossibque - who may have risen from the depths to kill again! The Adventure of the Missing Colonel - written originally for the Millard Fillmore Society, this Mystery drops our guests into a soup of international intrigue and murder in 1851. They must contend with a Guano Treaty, the Opening of Japan and divided loyalties that will soon erupt into the Civil War. |

| Let the Captain Design an Original Mystery for Your Group or Company |
One of the benefits of living on enchanted soil is our ability to create custom designed mysteries. We can cater a private dinner party for the evening, or an overnight or weekend long adventure. Perhaps you have always loved those hard-bitten
characters of mystery films of the 1940's; or your ski club is fascinated by tales of the Abominable Snowman; or your company wants to do an employee appreciation night that no one will forget (they all want to see the boss get his or her "just desserts")
. The Captain can make it happen! We created "The Adventure of the Missing Colonel" for a chapter of the Millard Fillmore Society...so...if your favorite TV program is American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, or Law & Order, we have a mystery jus t for you along with at least 25 other choices. |
| * How is this possible? We're built on enchanted soil, remember? One of your group will be the nefarious rogue and all the clues and evidence will be related to your group. We may even begin the Mystery several days before your evening - with fake memos at work, for instance. We'll work closely with one person from your group to get all the information we need, and then... you can leave the scheming to us! |
| We hope that you have enjoyed our "cook's tour" and we look forward to your stay with us. If there is anything else you would like to know about us, we are just a phone call away. During your stay, be sure to check out all of the area information and brochures in the Captain's "treasure chest" in the foyer. |
| Remember that this area is the largest tourist area in the state of Ohio, so there is a plethora of things to do and see. Huron and Captain Montague's is most certainly the heart of Lake Erie Coastal Ohio, but when you're here, you'll find you are far enough away from the hubbub to find relaxation, comfort and good company. |
